has never been easier to claim. But let's address the elephant in the room: There aren't as many EVs that qualify for the full or partial credit this year.

While the discount is substantial, it applies only to <a rel="follow" data-id="0234282c-fbe7-460b-b80a-fd180440105a" href=https://www.cnet.com/home/electric-vehicles/the-2024-ev-tax-credit-big-rebate-small-list/"https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/best-ev-electric-car/">electric vehicles that meet certain requirements, mostly around the sourcing and manufacturing of battery materials.

Yes, the list of eligible EVs shrank considerably at the start of 2024 as the requirements got tighter. But experts are optimistic, and the list of eligible models is already bouncing back.

"I do expect that this [list] will increase over time," said <a rel="nofollow" data-id="0707988d-8d8f-4566-ba0d-6e32a8249360" href=https://www.cnet.com/home/electric-vehicles/the-2024-ev-tax-credit-big-rebate-small-list/"https://www.cmu.edu/epp/people/faculty/kate-whitefoot.html">Kate Whitefoot, an associate professor of engineering and public policy at Carnegie Mellon University. That's because it's going to take time for automakers to set up the domestic battery and mineral supply chains necessary to meet the tax credit requirements -- which are still relatively new, she said.

Some experts believe you shouldn't wait for the list to grow (though it already has since the beginning of the year). If you want an EV right now, there's no need to wait for more vehicles to qualify, said <a rel="nofollow" data-id="8e352e69-07ea-4a66-b482-e71307d2a282" href=https://www.cnet.com/home/electric-vehicles/the-2024-ev-tax-credit-big-rebate-small-list/"https://evlife.co/about-us">Peter Glenn, founder and co-CEO of EV Life, an EV finance platform.
