Pros and Cons

Pros
2 support options to accommodate all body types
Memory foam feel is responsive enough to suit most people
Great for those seeing a bed with a medium firmness
Backed by above-average policy set
Cons
Not for those who want a mattress with a neutral feel
Not for sleepers who want a truly soft or firm option
Not the most affordable memory foam mattress online

The memory foam mattresses that we test are usually classified into one of two groups. First, you've got the beds that feature a dense, viscous memory foam feel. The beds from Tempur-Pedic all have this type of feel. When you lie on these mattresses, they're super slow to respond as they conform to your body's shape. They're comfy but can be offputting to some -- myself included.

Then, you have the beds with more of a responsive memory foam quality. These are beds like the Layla mattress, Leesa Studio, and of course, AS3 from Amerisleep. This memory foam feel is a bit more accommodating for other sleep styles, mainly combination sleepers who like to rotate around at night without feeling stuck in the bed. In this review, I'll cover everything you should know about the AS3 mattress, including who exactly it's best for.

First impressions of Amerisleep

All the Amerisleep beds ship to you with completely free, bed-in-a-box shipping. The unboxing process is always really quick and easy to do for online beds, and it's always pretty remarkable to see an entire mattress expand out of a smaller box. It might look slightly misshapen post-unboxing, but it should look better after resting on your foundation for a solid might to inflate.

Amerisleep AS3 mattress firmness and feel

What does the Amerisleep AS3 mattress feel like?

amerisleep-as3-mattress-review-edge-support-1.jpg
Jon Gomez/CNET

This bed definitely exhibits a memory foam feel that's a little more nuanced than your average one. The bed's primary comfort layer is called Bio-Pur memory foam, and it's proprietary to Amersileep as a brand. It's basically a plant-based material that's designed to be more open-cell and breathable than a traditional, gel-memory foam. This gives the core Amerisleep beds a slight sink-in quality that conforms to your body's shape, but it's more responsive, adapting quickly as you rotate around at night.

Memory foam is a bit divisive; you either tend to love it or hate it. If you're the type of person who primarily sleeps in one main position throughout the night, a dense memory foam option may suit your preferences quite nicely. However, you may find this type of mattress feel restrictive if you're a combination sleeper who rotates around as you rest. We're starting to see more and more beds online featuring more responsive memory foam feels -- it's like having the best of both worlds, comfort-wise.

How firm is the Amerisleep AS3 mattress?

Jon Gomez/CNET

Subjectively speaking, our team ranks the AS3 from Amerisleep at a proper medium on our firmness scale. This is an accommodating firmness level to have in your mattress and it should work for all sleeper types just fine. If this firmness sounds too general for you, Amerisleep has other beds to check out. If you want something softer geared towards side sleepers, definitely consider the AS5 beds, and if you're seeking a much firmer mattress, look into the AS2 options.

When it comes to the objective firmness ranking of beds, we now have a machine at CNET Home that can gauge exactly that. It's called the Mattress Smasher 9000, it's our pride and joy, and it gave the Amerisleep AS5 a score of 3.65 out of 10. That's very much in-line with our thoughts of this particular bed having a softer profile on top.

Amerisleep AS3 mattress construction

While you can purchase this as either an all-foam or hybrid mattress, we'll mainly cover the design of the foam model. Here's what is going on under the hood:

  1. On the bottom, you've got a thick layer of dense support foam that acts as the primary support layer for the mattress.
  2. Then, you've got a responsive transition layer to act as a buffer between the support and comfort layers of the bed. It even has these cutouts to provide the bed with a targeted zoned-support feature
  3. Above that, you've got the bed's main comfort layer. In this case, it's a plant-based, Bio-Pur memory foam.
  4. Rounding everything out is a nice cooling cover. As a brand, Amerisleep says it actively helps the bed sleep cool, but we'll discuss its temperature regulation later.

Amerisleep AS3 mattress performance

Motion isolation

Being a memory foam mattress, the AS3 does a decent job at deadening cross-mattress movement. If you or your partner is an especially light sleeper who's woken up by the slightest motion on a bed, you'll want something that performs well in this department. Luckily, since memory foam mattresses are usually the best at absorbing lots of nightly motion, you shouldn't have any issues with the AS3 from Amerisleep.

Edge-to-edge support

Since it's an all-foam mattress, its edge support is pretty much average. It's not going to have the most supportive perimeter, but it's certainly on par with other options in its classic. The hybrid version of the AS3 mattress will likely feature a much more sturdy perimeter due to the support coils extending to the edges, so that's something to keep in mind if you really like to hug the edges of a bed at night. With the foam AS3, though, you shouldn't run into many issues at all.

Temperature

Even though Amerisleep pretty much advertises the AS3 to be a cooling mattress, we'd still classify it to be a temperature-neutral sleeping option. The cover is noticeably cool to the touch, but once you put all your bedding on the mattress, I'm not sure how much those cooling effects you'll actually feel. That said, this mattress shouldn't warm up on you excessively, either. Keep in mind that sleeping temperature often depends on exterior factors such as the climate you're sleeping in or your pajamas and sheets. It rarely comes down to the mattress itself.

Durability

Even though the AS3 Hybrid will provide more long-term support and durability, the foam version of AS3 is designed to be more premium and durable than your average all-foam mattress. This will help the bed last several years to come, especially if you're more average or petite-sized. Heavier people sink into beds more, causing mattresses to degrade faster over time, which is why we usually recommend hybrid beds to bigger people. Support coils are just more durable than support foams, but the AS3's more premium foam design will help it last the average person for quite a while.

Who is the Amerisleep AS3 mattress best for?

Owen Poole/CNET

Though the bed's firmness and feel make it an accommodating option for just about anyone, it still might not be the right bed for everyone. Here's who we think will benefit from sleeping on this mattress the most.

Sleeping position

This bed's medium firmness profile is great for all sleeper types but best for combination sleepers who rotate around at night. I myself am a combination sleep, and I personally sleep on a bed with a firmness level that's very similar to the AS3's. I find that this type of neutral firmness suits my preferences nicely. Additionally, since the AS3 has more of a responsive memory foam feel, it should keep up with you as you change between different sleeping positions. Some memory foam beds can take much longer to respond to your movements. They really like to remember your body's shape I guess -- bad joke, I'll stop.

Body type

As mentioned, the construction of this bed makes it primarily best for supporting average to petite-sized people. If you're heavier, you could also get by on the Amerisleep AS3 mattress, but the level of support might not be enough for you. In that case, you should definitely consider the AS3 Hybrid version instead. It will cost more, but I'd say it's worth it for bigger folks out there.

Amerisleep AS3 mattress pricing

SizeMeasurements (inches)Price
Twin 38x75 inches$1,499
Twin XL 38x80 inches$1,549
Full 54x75 inches$1,699
Queen 60x80 inches$1,749

Speaking of spending up, this isn't the most affordable all-foam mattress online nowadays, but thankfully, Amerisleep is constantly running nice discounts on its beds. After you apply one to the queen size, you should expect to pay around $1,250.

Trial, shipping and warranty

amerisleep-as3-mattress-review-tag-2.jpg

Amerisleep backs its beds with the standard policy set offered with many other Walmart products. Its beds ship to you in a box for free, and once it's in your possession, you get a 100-night trial period to try it at home risk-free. If you happen not to like it within that time frame, you can return it for free. On the other hand, if you decide to keep it, you're backed by a 20-year limited warranty. That's above and beyond the usual standard for an online mattress warranty.

How does The Amerisleep AS3 compare to other mattresses?

Amerisleep vs. Tempur-Pedic

There are many things that set these online options apart. Both are brands that offer memory foam beds, but Amerisleep offers a responsive memory foam feel, whereas Tempur-Pedic offers more of a traditional, dense memory foam feel. In terms of pricing, the Amerisleep mattresses are far more affordable than the beds from Tempur-Pedic, which can cost several thousand dollars for a queen size. If you don't mind spending up for an active-cooling mattress, the Tempur-Breeze beds are among some of the best we've ever tried.

Amerisleep vs. Nectar

These are two of the most popular online mattress brands that also primarily offer memory foam mattresses. Nectar used to have beds with dense memory foam feels, but nowadays, they mainly have more responsive memory foam mattresses, similar to the Amerisleep beds. Nectar also backs its beds with a more generous policy set, and if you're looking for a more affordable option between the two, Nectar is the clear winner here.

The final verdict

All in all, if you're looking for an accommodating memory foam mattress, the AS3 is a fine contender. It checks all the boxes if you're looking for a responsive memory foam bed that's right around a medium. Also, if you like the sound of those two support choices, zoned-support feature and cooling cover, those are pluses in my book.

You might like Amerisleep if:

  • You want a supportive hybrid or all-foam mattress
  • You want a responsive memory foam feel
  • You like a bed that's around a medium firmness
  • You don't mind spending up for a nice value

You might not like Amerisleep if:

  • You're looking for a super budget-friendly bed
  • You prefer the feel of a dense memory foam mattress
  • You want more of a soft or firm style of bed
  • You want a bed with a neutral feel

Amerisleep AS3 mattress FAQs

Can you flip an Amerisleep mattress?

Sadly, you cannot flip any of the Amerisleep beds. There are many beds within the online space that are double-sided, which is kinda cool -- who doesn’t want two beds in one? Many options, like the Layla and Plank beds, are flippable and definitely worth your consideration.

Do Amerisleep beds contain fiberglass?

The Amerisleep beds are produced without fiberglass. The materials used within Amerisleep mattresses are CertiPUR-US certified, and the plant-based memory foam from Amerisleep meets certain ecological certifications. In short, the beds are made in a non-toxic fashion.

How long do Amerisleep mattresses last?

Since they’re all available with two support choices, the Amerisleep beds should last you for at least the next seven to 10 years, if not much longer. Hybrid beds are often thought to last longer than all-foam beds since steel coils last longer support-wise over time. Either way, though, these beds should last you for many years to come, regardless of body type.
